For many children in Kakamega and across Kenya, the story is shaped by poverty. While we often see the visible effects of poverty such as lack of food, worn-out clothes or missed school days, the hidden struggles go much deeper. They affect children’s confidence, health and dreams for the future.
1. The Silent Battle with Education
For many children, poverty doesn’t just mean missing a meal, it can mean missing an entire future. When families can’t afford school fees, uniforms, or basic learning materials, children are forced to stay home. Some take on odd jobs or domestic work to help their families survive. Over time, the gap in education widens, leaving these children trapped in the same cycle of poverty their parents faced.
At Tenda Wema CBO, we believe education is the foundation of change. That’s why we help vulnerable children stay in school by linking them with sponsors, providing school essentials and supporting community initiatives that promote equal access to education.
2. Emotional and Mental Health Struggles
Poverty isn’t just physical, it takes a toll on a child’s emotional and mental well-being. Children growing up in hardship often experience anxiety, low self-esteem and hopelessness. Some are exposed to neglect, domestic violence or stigma, which leaves lasting emotional scars.
Through our mental health awareness programs, Tenda Wema provides safe spaces where children can talk, heal and rediscover hope. We partner with psychologists, schools and parents to ensure children’s emotional needs are not overlooked.
3. The Weight of Daily Survival
For children in poverty, every day is a struggle to meet basic needs such as food, shelter and healthcare. Hunger makes it hard to focus in school, while untreated illnesses keep them from attending classes. Poverty robs them of their right to a carefree childhood.
That’s why we work with communities and partners to provide basic support, connect families to local resources and promote long-term solutions like livelihoods programs that empower parents economically.
How We Can All Help?
The fight against child poverty requires everyone’s hand, from individuals to organizations and local leaders. You can help by:
- Supporting a child’s education through school sponsorships or donations.
- Volunteering your time or skills with local organizations.
- Spreading awareness about the challenges children face in your community.
- Supporting community projects that empower families economically.
Every small act of kindness can change a child’s story and give them a chance to dream again.
At Tenda Wema CBO, we believe that every child deserves to grow up with dignity, education and hope. Together, we can build a future where poverty no longer defines a child’s destiny.
